I have always been of the opinion that in our modern internet age, it can never really pay off pay money for physical magazines when you can basically find the same information for free on the internet. I still think that this is true. However, the problem is actually finding the time to locate and read the free information. In addition, I have never been particular good at reading longer complicated texts on the internet, so I just simply tend never to actually read it. On the other hand, with a physical magazine you can read it at your leisure, for instance while on the bus, in the train or in a waiting room.
Starting this year, our household subscribe to Practical Photography (PP), which we decided on based on prince and content after comparison with a few other magazines. What I particularly like with PP is that it covers a wide spectrum of topics each month; dedicated tutorials on how to post process your images using Adobe Photoshop or Elements, themes on various photographic techniques such as black& white photography, how to make money from your photos etc., a gear guide covering cameras lenses and accessories, some short and quick practical tips and finally it has a very useful image workshop, where readers can send in their images to get them assessed by professionals. One of these days I will have to try that.
So if you, like me, often are short of time, a bit lazy and/or lack inspiration, then the around £40 for a subscription to a photography magazine is well worth it.
